What is new drawing canvas in Word?
In Microsoft Word, when a user inserts an AutoShape or Text box in a document, a drawing canvas appears, allowing the user to "draw" the AutoShape or Text box. The drawing canvas features a shaded border and has the words "Create your drawing here" inside it.
As such, it comes in very handy when you are creating a drawing that contains several individual drawing objects. For instance, you might combine different shapes to create a complex drawing. If those shapes are contained within the drawing canvas, then they are easier to manage as a whole.
In the illustrations group, click the Shapes dropdown. At the bottom of the resulting list, click New Drawing Layer. Word will display a new drawing layer. Once you have a canvas, you can insert text, shapes, or write using one of the many pen options.

If you hate the drawing canvas as much as I do, you can kill it! Just go to Tools Options, General tab, and untick Automatically create drawing canvas when inserting AutoShapes.
