How are objects uploaded to S3 by default?
When you upload a folder, Amazon S3 uploads all of the files and subfolders from the specified folder to your bucket. It then assigns an object key name that is a combination of the uploaded file name and the folder name.
- Open the Amazon S3 console.
- From the list of buckets, choose the bucket with the objects that you want to update.
- Navigate to the folder that contains the objects.
- From the object list, select all the objects that you want to make public.
- Choose Actions, and then choose Make public.
When you use server-side encryption, Amazon S3 encrypts an object before saving it to disk and decrypts it when you download the objects. For more information about protecting data using server-side encryption and encryption key management, see Protecting data using server-side encryption.
Default encryption works with all existing and new Amazon S3 buckets. Without default encryption, to encrypt all objects stored in a bucket, you must include encryption information with every object storage request.

Data protection refers to protecting data while in-transit (as it travels to and from Amazon S3) and at rest (while it is stored on disks in Amazon S3 data centers). You can protect data in transit using Secure Socket Layer/Transport Layer Security (SSL/TLS) or client-side encryption.

Additionally, Amazon EC2 and Amazon S3 support the enforcement of encryption by setting default encryption. You can use AWS Managed Config Rules to check automatically that you are using encryption, for example, for EBS volumes, RDS instances, and S3 buckets.
By default, all Amazon S3 buckets and objects are private. Only the resource owner which is the AWS account that created the bucket can access that bucket. The resource owner can, however, choose to grant access permissions to other resources and users.
Log into the console, click on S3, and look for the Public tag. AWS uses some advanced back end math to evaluate all the bucket policies to figure out if something is public, which catches most of the fringe cases, but it does not show if the bucket is private and objects in it are public.
A user who does not have AWS credentials or permission to access an S3 object can be granted temporary access by using a presigned url. A presigned url is generated by an AWS user who has access to the object. The generated url is then given to the user without making our bucket private.
Objects stored in the S3 One Zone-IA storage class are stored redundantly within a single Availability Zone in the AWS Region you select. For S3 on Outposts, your data is stored in your Outpost on-premises environment, unless you manually choose to transfer it to an AWS Region.
