What percentage of soldiers make it to E8?

By law, the authorized daily average of enlisted personnel in pay grades E-8 and E- 9 may not be more than 2.5% and 1.25%, respectively, of the number of enlisted members in a given Service on the first day of the fiscal year.

The next rank up is Senior Master Sergeant (E-8) and it is very difficult and highly competitive to get this promotion, as many public laws only allow 2% of the Air Force workforce to be in grade E-8. To be eligible for promotion to this rank, you'll need 11 years of service and 20 months in your previous grade.

Master sergeants (E-8) and master gunnery sergeants (E-9) provide technical leadership as occupational specialists in their specific MOS. The sergeant major of the Marine Corps is the senior enlisted Marine of the entire Marine Corps, personally selected by the commandant.

Demotion and appellate authorities

For Reserve members, AFRC/CC is the demotion authority for E-8 and E-9 although this may be delegated to NAF commanders.

It is reasonable to assume that the average enlisted member will be able to retire at 20 years, having achieved the rank of E-7, and the average officer should be able to retire at 20 years at the rank of O-5.

Drill sergeants in the United States Army are sergeants (E-5), staff sergeants (E-6), sergeants first class (E-7), and rarely master sergeants (E-8).
