Use the Alexa app to turn Brief Mode on or off and adjust the length of Alexa responses.

- Open More and select Settings.
- Select Voice Responses.
- Turn Brief Mode on or off.
To do this, simply tap the Customized option on the Alexa Says screen and type in what you'd like Alexa to say in response. Your response can be any phrase up to 250 characters. If you're wondering (let's be real, you are wondering), you can't make Alexa curse.
Notification types
Device notification – For Alexa-enabled devices without screens, the device notification is a yellow ring and a chime sound. Announcement – For devices with and without screens, Alexa makes announcements by voice. Persistent visual alert – Persistent visual alerts are only for devices with screens.
From the Communicate tab of the app, select the Announce button. Then use either the microphone button to record an audio announcement (which will play in the user's voice) or the keyboard to write a text announcement (which will play in Alexa's voice).

Check that you've turned on push notification permissions for the Alexa app. From the Alexa Together dashboard, go to Alerts and make sure that your notifications are on.

Do I have to say Alexa every time?

A: Look in the Alexa app for routines. Mine was doing this at 3am every night and I found a “Morning Volume” routine that was setting the volume to level 3 at 3am every night. Ugh! I disabled the routine and it fixed it!
You may wonder if Alexa is listening to conversations, or listening to everything you say. You may want to know whether Alexa listens to you when you're not directly interacting with an Echo device. The answer to those questions is no. Alexa and all of our Echo devices are designed with your privacy in mind.
The Listeners are always listening and watching
If you say, "Alexa, ask The Listeners," Alexa will start saying things like "We are always listening" and will continue speaking in a disturbing manner with awkward pauses.
Also, if you say “Thank you” after she's performed an action for you,” she'll say “No problem,” “You bet,” or another acknowledgement of your gratitude. Alexa won't hear you say “Thank you,” however, unless you have Follow-up Mode enabled.
